Statement of the problem

The majority of middle-aged people show interest in learning English as a second language. They have several reasons as getting a job, traveling, or cultural interest. In contrast, some studies have found advantages in cognitive health for seniors who learn languages mentioned by (Stine-Morrow et al., 2007). They diminish emotional affections that are common in that age. They do not feel confident with students of other generations.

In Colombia, there is no educational policy for middle-aged and elderly students. They do not feel comfortable with the traditional methods to learn English. For instance, the platforms and textbooks have as a purpose to learn grammar and language forms rather than the content and appropriacy of the language. Another factor remarkable in this population that is a personal appreciation is that they need to understand step 1 completely to move on to step 2 caused they were educated in a lineal and perfectionist way. On the other hand, some studies show the feelings and thoughts about themselves affect their learning performance.

It is required a group of people aged between 50 to 65 years old. Because of the pandemic, it is necessary to keep this population safe so the meetings, interviews and classes must carry out online. They need support at home while they feel more confident with the online tools and it is important to involved some approaches that allow the teacher to work on the affective strategy.
